Does Axle work with my tariff, supplier and other schemes?
The Demand Flexibility Service and short notice events
What is the Demand Flexibility Service (DFS)?
The Demand Flexibility Service (DFS) is run by the National Energy System Operator (NESO), which balances Great Britain's electricity system. It pays households to use less electricity from the grid, or export more, at busy times. Companies like Axle take part on your behalf, and each meter can only have one DFS provider.
Are Axle events part of DFS?
Some are. Axle has two kinds of event:
Standard events: these aren't part of DFS. We tell you the day before, and taking part doesn't register your meter for DFS.
Short notice events: these all include participation in DFS. You get at least 2 hours' notice, and you opt in to them separately in your Axle account.
When does Axle register me for DFS?
Only if you turn on short notice events in your Axle account. Standard events don't register you, so you're free to use another DFS provider.
What if I'm already signed up to another DFS scheme?
Turning on short notice events moves your registration to Axle, so you can no longer take part in your other provider's DFS events. To stay with them, leave short notice events off.
Does Axle change anything about my export MPAN?
If you opt into short notice events, we register your export MPAN with NESO as your DFS provider. Your SEG payments aren't affected.
Can I take part in Octopus Saving Sessions and Axle?
Yes, as long as short notice events are turned off. Saving Sessions and Axle short notice events both run through DFS, and each meter can only have one DFS provider.
Tariffs
Which tariffs is Axle compatible with?
Axle works with every UK energy supplier and tariff. A few tariffs have their own terms on third-party battery control or the Demand Flexibility Service, so it's worth checking those with your supplier. Here's are some tariff's we're commonly asked about:
Intelligent Octopus Go and Intelligent Octopus Flux: check the Octopus tariff's terms and conditions as they may prohibit you signing up to another flexibility provider. Intelligent Octopus Go doesn't allow DFS so keep short notice events off if joining Axle.
Octopus Agile, Octopus Flux and other time-of-use tariffs: these work fine with Axle.
EDF GoElectric: works with Axle. If you want short notice events too, check EDF's terms on DFS first.
Feed-in Tariff and SEG export tariffs: your payments aren't affected. See the export section below.
Export, SEG and your supplier
Does Axle buy the electricity I export?
No. Your export still goes to your supplier, who pays your Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) or export rate directly to you as normal.
What does Axle pay me for?
When the grid is under strain, we ask your battery to export stored energy to help relieve some of the strain. We pay £1/kWh for what you export during these events, measured at your smart meter, on top of your supplier's payments. Events usually happen 3 to 6 times a month for 1 to 2 hours, and we guarantee at least £10 a month.
My SEG tariff says I can't have any other export arrangements. Can I still use Axle?
Yes. Axle doesn't buy your export, so it isn't an export arrangement.
Will Axle affect my Feed-in Tariff payments?
No, your FIT payments aren't affected.
